Or do you have a bicycle, but it is in need of some serious repairs? If you answered 'yes' to any of these questions, read on to find out more about the many bicycle rehab locations in New Jersey.
What is a bike rehab location?
Bicycle rehab facilities collect used bicycles and parts from discarded bicycles and use them to create rehabbed bicycles that can be given away to those in need or sold at a low price to cover their ongoing costs. If you need a bicycle, the bicycle rehab locations in New Jersey can be an excellent way to get your hands on one for a great price. In some cases, eligible recipients are able to obtain bicycles from these non-profit organizations for free.
Additionally, they are great places to learn about how to repair and maintain your bicycle as they often have all the tools necessary to make repairs, no matter how significant. Spare parts (e.g. tubes, chains, or tires) however, may need to be purchased in advance. Are you already handy around a bicycle? As the majority of these locations are run by volunteers, they're always looking for help.
Where are the bicycle rehab locations?
We know of ten bicycle rehab organizations in New Jersey, with locations throughout the state. While most locations operate in only one location, some actually serve multiple locations across the state. The services provided also vary at each location. Below, we will delve further into each of the locations to highlight where they are doing business and what services they provide. Jersey City: Hudson Transportation Management Association (TMA) Bike Rehab Program
Hudson TMA, accepts donated bicycles of all kinds. The bicycles are rehabilitated and then given to eligible recipients. Recipient eligibility is based on three criteria: the adult must want to use a bicycle as part of their commute, the distance and route must be appropriate for using a bicycle as part of the commute, and the applicant cannot afford to buy one. Local Community Action Programs (CAP) in Hudson County assists Hudson TMA in identifying suitable applicants. With each bicycle that is given out through the program the recipient also receives a helmet, a light, and a brief instruction in cycling safety. So far, one hundred bicycles have been distributed since the program began three years ago.
There are various ways Hudson TMA collects bikes from the public. Its parent company, the Hudson County Improvement Authority, hosts several recycling events throughout the County and accept bicycles from those willing to donate at the event. Donations of bicycles in good condition are always welcomed, where "good" condition can be described as a bicycle that includes a seat, has brakes, tires, and the frame is not bent or covered in rust. New and/or unused helmets or monetary donations are welcomed as well. Hudson TMA can also arrange for unwanted bicycles to be dropped off at various locations in Hudson County. Pick-ups can be arranged, but only if more than two bikes are being picked up from the same location.

Ewing: The Boys & Girls Clubs of Mercer County, 1500 N. Olden Avenue, Ewing, NJ
Through their Bike Exchange program, the Boys and Girls Club of Mercer County offers good quality and low-cost used bikes for all bike riders. All individuals working at the Exchange are volunteers. Volunteers spend their time collecting donated bikes, reconditioning them and selling them for a minimal fee. The Exchange has shops in Trenton, Plainfield and Newark. All money received from the sale of bikes goes to support the Boys & Girls Clubs' after-school programs.

New Brunswick Bike Exchange – 90 Jersey Ave, New Brunswick, NJ
Run by a group of volunteers serving Middlesex County, this organization works with the Puerto Rican Action Board to raise money to support various community services, including bike exchange volunteer pick-ups, repair and refurbish donated bicycles, and recirculate them back into the community. Since its inception as a collaboration between New Brunswick Tomorrow, the Puerto Rican Action Board, and the Trenton Bike Exchange, this organization has sold over 600 bikes and raised $28,500 for PRAB between May 2013 to December of 2019.

The Cyclab – Princeton, NJ
Cyclab is a cooperative space for proper bike maintenance in Princeton. Their mission is to "empower the cycling community by providing hands-on education about bicycle repair and maintenance. In addition, the Cyclab aims to serve as a forum for the promotion of eco-conscious modes of transportation, exercise, and FUN!" Located at 130 University Place in Princeton, the Cyclab is open two days a week, from 1-5pm on Sunday and 5-9pm on Wednesday. Throughout the year the Cyclab holds events that include workshops, group rides, and "bike parties".
Due to COVID-19, this organization is currently closed indefinitely, but in the meantime those interested are encouraged to check out other local bike shops and follow their facebook page for updates.

Asbury Park: Second Life Bikes
Second Life Bikes (formerly known as The Bike Church) is a biking community center in Asbury Park. It serves as a bike sales and repair shop where you can donate old bikes, or shop for a repurposed bike. The shop also serves as a hub in the community where cyclists can connect, build skills, join group bike rides, learn bike safety, and even create bike art. Second Life Bikes is located at 21 Main St, Asbury Park from 11am-5:30pm, Tuesday through Saturday. Donations, repairs, visitors and volunteers are all welcome during those times. Even when the store is at capacity, bicycle donations can be left at the bike rack in front of the shop.

Atlantic County Utilities Authority – Atlantic County
This organization is currently looking to partner with organizations or volunteers in the area to keep up their bike recycling program. In the past, they have partnered with Pedals for Progress, which sent bikes abroad for people in need, as well as local volunteer Drew Smith who refurbished old bicycles and distributed them to residents and children of Atlantic City through St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church. So far, over 525 bicycles have been donated through various partnerships.

Collingswood Bike Share – Collingswood, NJ
This program is designed to recycle bicycles no longer in use and provide an affordable option for borough residents to obtain bikes. The bikes come from donations and unclaimed property from the police department. Each bike or "green machine" is painted bright green so they are easy to identify as a Collingswood Bike Share vehicle.
They charge people $25 per year to join the program for a green machine which includes using a bike for an extended period, or different bikes on many different occasions, or trading in to receive a different bike as available. There is no charge for regular volunteer mechanics of the program but donations are accepted and appreciated. There hours of operation are every Saturday morning during the Collingswood Farmers' Market, 8 am to 12 pm, or Tuesday evenings, 5 to 8 pm at garage between the Community Center and the Department of Public Works garage.

GTWheels Sustainable Bike Library – Camden County & Gloucester County
On May 24, 2018, Camden County, Gloucester County, and Cross County Connection TMA introduced the GTWheels Sustainable Bike Library. It is the fourth and largest local Bike Library program established through the County. This organization is run entirely through volunteers that repair donated or recovered bicycles and offer them to the public for no cost. Residents will be able to borrow a refurbished bike from their municipal distribution center located at the Lakeland Complex, and then return it when they are done using it if they'd like. This organization provides residents with a fun, healthy, free and green form of recreation and transportation. All of the bikes are recycled or refurbished and can actually be brought home.
In order to obtain a bicycle from the GTWheels Sustainable Bike Library, Gloucester Township residents will simply fill out an online membership form, visit the distribution center with identification and proof of residency, sign two documents: a liability waiver and a policy and procedures form, and then pick out a bike that best suits them. Bikes range in size to accommodate both children and adults, helmets are also available upon request. Borrowing can be for a short or an extended period of time.
GTWheels Sustainable Bike Library is located at Camden County Lakeland Eco-Complex, Reagan Building, 508 Lakeland Road, Gloucester Township, NJ 08012. Their hours of operation are Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm, and Saturday from 10am to 12pm. Contact – Phone: 856-374-5195.

Plainfield: Boys & Girls Club of Union County, 145 Park Avenue, Plainfield, NJ 07060.
The organization manages and organizes the Plainfield Bike Exchange which receives old, broken, or unwanted bikes from bike shops, local organizations, and people within the community. Their team includes a group of mechanics that replace broken or worn parts, and check every aspect of the mechanics of the bicycle before shining it up and placing it in a showroom. Their bicycles are set at a low price between $15 to $100 for most toddlers, youth, junior, and adult bicycles. Where 100% of the proceeds go directly towards the Plainfield's Clubs After-School Program.

Pedals for Progress – Multiple locations
Pedals for Progress has been receiving, processing and donating bicycles and parts to partner charities in 32 developing world countries since 1991. The organization aims to "supply economic development aid by recycling bicycles and sewing machines in the U.S. and shipping them to people of the developing world." Going beyond the local aspect of the previous shops, "P4P" as it is often referred to, understands the importance of transportation in developing countries and how bicycles can provide basic transportation for those in need. While working closely with partner organizations in these countries, P4P aims to go beyond just distributing the bicycles, but also works within communities in these countries to teach proper bicycle maintenance and safety. It is their belief that the provision of bicycles will help to further stimulate local economies and create opportunities that would not have been there without them.

Millburn Bike Collective – Millburn, NJ
This organization is supported through the Millburn Township Pedestrian Safety Advisory Board to divert bicycles that would otherwise end up in scrapyards and repurposes them for future use. In partnership with Bike & Walk Millburn, the organization also offers bike repair education and promotes safe bicycling. In partnership with Back Roads Only Bikes, a township-based mobile bike repair service, the organization repairs used bicycles and coordinates with the Family Promise of Essex County for donation facilitation. Since its inception, the organization has donated 16 bikes to the Family Promise of Essex County and diverted 36 bikes from scrap yards.
